I have the honour to transmit for your information a copy of the Chief Justice's notes on the trial of the case of Regina v. Job Witchell, which recently took place in the Supreme Court, together with an extract from the Daily Press of the 4th instant containing (in a somewhat abbreviated form) the Judge's address to the Jury.
Encl: 1. 29th July, 1897 sent separately.
End: 2 4th Aug.
I also enclose for your information an extract relating to this particular case from the memorandum of the Attorney General, which forms an enclosure of my despatch under reference. You will observe from that extract that, although there is reason to suspect other Police officers of accepting bribes, it has so far not been possible to collect sufficient evidence to institute criminal proceedings.
